Kubuntu Won't be Switching to Mir or XMir

Thursday, 27 June 2013
A few months ago Canonical announced their new graphics system for Ubuntu, Mir. It's a shame the Linux desktop market hasn't taken off as we all hoped at the turn of the millennium and they feel the need to follow a more Apple or Android style of approach making an OS which works in isolation rather than as part of a community development method. 4.11 Build Chart and What Else?

Friday, 21 June 2013
SC 4.11 build chart. Lines and lines and lines! < Riddell> "Aurélien renewed their own membership in the Kubuntu Members" yay agateau still loves us! < aurélien> Riddell: of course I do! < aurélie> You know, sometimes people are surprised I am still running Kubuntu now that I left Canonical. I like to answer them "What else?" :)

Is that really the source code for this software?

I've been looking into how easy it is to confirm that a binary package corresponds to a source package. It turns out that it is not easy at all. So I've written down my findings in this blog entry. Read More

Compiling *all* of KDE SC from svn/git

Tuesday, 18 June 2013
On my desktop machine, I have always tried to compile "everything". At a time it was easy: about 18 SVN modules listed in kdesvn-buildrc, trunk for everything, done. Nowadays there are many more git modules - I currently compile 234 modules, with the help of kdesrc-buildrc (I don't have to list all 234 modules, it expands them for me). Still it's a bit difficult to ensure I really have everything... Read More

New Blue Systems Edinburgh Office at Tech Cube

Monday, 3 June 2013
After many years of working away from my bedroom desk I was invited to a party at the opening of a new hotdesking space. Tech Cube is an attempt to create an entrepreneurial office space in Edinburgh. As I heard it the old Royal Dick (no sniggering at the back) vet school got sold to a nice guy with deep pockets who is turning it into an arts complex but the ugly wee tower block stuck on the side was not very artistic so get turned into this little project. Re-Blog: Martin Gräßlin - Mir in Kubuntu

Monday, 13 May 2013
A repost of Martin Gräßlin's blog Mir in Kubuntu for the benefit of Planet Ubuntu As you might have seen in Jonathan’s blog post we discussed Mir in Kubuntu at the “Mataro Sessions II”. It’s a topic I would have preferred to not have to discuss at all. But the dynamics in the free software world force us to discuss it and obviously our downstream needs to know why we as an upstream do not consider Mir adoption as a valid option. Read More
