Kubuntu: Best KDE distro of 2013

Monday, 16 September 2013
The writer on Netrunner Mag did a review of the Best KDE Distro of 2013 and came to the following conclusion: So beauty plus stability plus accessibility, the precarious triple-point equilibrium lands flat in the court of Kubuntu. This is quite an achievement, and the team behind their project should be really proud. Raring Ringtail is an awesome KDE demonstrator, and it tickles all the right glands. If you have friends and family you might want to expose to Linux, then Kubuntu will probably be the best overall choice.

Bugfix thanks

Application icons had stopped showing sometimes in the KDE SC 4.11.1 update but our lovely upstreams found a fix and when I was notified by a user I was happy to add it to the Kubuntu packages. What a lovely response.. Read More

Medibuntu to Disappear, libdvdcss now direct from VideoLan

Wednesday, 11 September 2013
Medibuntu the archive with libdvdcss and a number of other package which couldn't be put into the official Ubuntu archive is to disappear. Gauvain Pocentek who has been maintaining it for some time is wanting to move himself and his server on. At Blue Systems and in Kubuntu we looked over the packages in the archive and realised they were all obsolete or unnessecary because most are now in the official Ubuntu archive or have better equivalents which are. The main exception is libdvdcss which is illegal in the US so can't go in the archive. But fear not I've been working with the developers of libdvdcss at VideoLan to set up an archive directly at VideoLan. It works with either Ubuntu or Debian of pretty much any release Read More

New Umbrello Website

Tuesday, 13 August 2013
Umbrello is the premier UML diagram tool for Linux desktops. UML is a standard for making diagrams of software, useful for documenting and planning your programs. I took over Umbrello in about 2002 and maintained it as part of my University final year project. One of the first changes that I made to Umbrello was to make it a KDE project, it was the natural home. But I never moved the website or mailing list, Sourceforge was good enough. Read More
