Medibuntu to Disappear, libdvdcss now direct from VideoLan
Wednesday, 11 September 2013
Medibuntu the archive with libdvdcss and a number of other package which couldn't be put into the official Ubuntu archive is to disappear. Gauvain Pocentek who has been maintaining it for some time is wanting to move himself and his server on. At Blue Systems and in Kubuntu we looked over the packages in the archive and realised they were all obsolete or unnessecary because most are now in the official Ubuntu archive or have better equivalents which are. The main exception is libdvdcss which is illegal in the US so can't go in the archive. But fear not I've been working with the developers of libdvdcss at VideoLan to set up an archive directly at VideoLan. It works with either Ubuntu or Debian of pretty much any release

New Umbrello Website
Tuesday, 13 August 2013
Umbrello is the premier UML diagram tool for Linux desktops. UML is a standard for making diagrams of software, useful for documenting and planning your programs.
I took over Umbrello in about 2002 and maintained it as part of my University final year project. One of the first changes that I made to Umbrello was to make it a KDE project, it was the natural home. But I never moved the website or mailing list, Sourceforge was good enough.

Project Neon 5 daily builds, Ubiquity Wireless Setup
Wednesday, 31 July 2013
Project Neon is a fantastic resource for KDE developers giving daily builds for KDE software. It's maintained by the lovely Kubuntu community on the lovely Launchpad infrastructure. KDE developers can install the various bits they need to develop their part of KDE without having to worry about compiling everything themselves. It installs everything into /opt so it doesn't touch your normal software installation. Thanks to the hard work of Harald and others we have the first KDE Frameworks 5 builds on Neon! I expect this to prove a vital resource in developing Frameworks 5.

Easier OpenDocument coding in Calligra and lovely junior jobs
Tuesday, 30 July 2013
The office suite Calligra can save many file formats, but the main one is OpenDocument Format. With a proposed improvement, it can be easier than ever to code on Calligra.
The OpenDocument files (odt, ods, odp) that Calligra writes are zip files with XML documents and images. The XML documents have a schema, a set of rules that say what goes where in the files. Here is a small sample of ODF, indented for readability:
