Switching to Kubuntu comments
Jriddell

Some comments on switching to Kubuntu from a recent Slashdot article...
I switched to Kubuntu ... I haven't looked back. I like *buntu distributions simply because they're the easiest to get up and running. Unless you need a highly customized Linux system, you can't argue with *buntu's simplicity when it comes to installation.

Tuning KDevelop's UI layout
With some idle time on my hands due to waiting on an especially long build, I decided to put some time into cleaning up my KDevelop's UI layout today:
Click for original resolution.
I removed all but the elements I actually ever click on in the main window -- all the rest I usually access via keyboard shortcuts or the menu (which I'm now going to try using via the window deco button). Since working on an IRC client makes you feel at home with text fields at the bottom of windows, I moved those toolbars down below the bottom toolview button and moved the remaining toolbar actions into the left toolview button column (I already use label-less toolbars on the left in some other apps, e.g. Gwenview). All together, this saves a lot of vertical space, which is precious on my widescreen laptop.

Kubuntu: Best KDE distro of 2013
Jriddell
|
The writer on Netrunner Mag did a review of the Best KDE Distro of 2013 and came to the following conclusion:
So beauty plus stability plus accessibility, the precarious triple-point equilibrium lands flat in the court of Kubuntu. This is quite an achievement, and the team behind their project should be really proud. Raring Ringtail is an awesome KDE demonstrator, and it tickles all the right glands. If you have friends and family you might want to expose to Linux, then Kubuntu will probably be the best overall choice.

Application icons had stopped showing sometimes in the KDE SC 4.11.1 update but our lovely upstreams found a fix and when I was notified by a user I was happy to add it to the Kubuntu packages. What a lovely response..

Medibuntu to Disappear, libdvdcss now direct from VideoLan
Jriddell
|
Medibuntu the archive with libdvdcss and a number of other package which couldn't be put into the official Ubuntu archive is to disappear. Gauvain Pocentek who has been maintaining it for some time is wanting to move himself and his server on. At Blue Systems and in Kubuntu we looked over the packages in the archive and realised they were all obsolete or unnessecary because most are now in the official Ubuntu archive or have better equivalents which are. The main exception is libdvdcss which is illegal in the US so can't go in the archive. But fear not I've been working with the developers of libdvdcss at VideoLan to set up an archive directly at VideoLan. It works with either Ubuntu or Debian of pretty much any release
