So, it is that time of the week again... commit-digest time! Read the latest issue here This week, I have enhanced the commit-digest.org site quite a bit (though I am certainly not finished) - now there are actually links in the sidebar, so it is now a functional random strip of blue, and I have implemented the options page that I always wanted. This means that you can now modify how the digest looks in your browser, for example, if you don't like the italic quotes, change to regular. It looks like the general idea of klik has come to the MS Windows world now too. I mean the idea of klik (or of Apple's AppDirs, if you want) how to handle software programs: namely, as by and large self-contained units that bring along all their direct dependencies within one single entity; units that are easy to relocate to a USB stick or to a CD-RW medium without a need for any installation process; units that maintain the ability to instantly run from any different place they might be saved to. Exhausted, but happy about the work we've done I'm now back in Stuttgart. I have attended the 3 intensive days of discussions and work that were the Desktop Linux Printing Summit, jointly organized by OSDL (John Cherry) and Linuxprinting.org (Till Kamppeter). It was held in Atlanta, hosted by Lanier at their Education Center. The hosting was made possible by Uli Wehner. Uli is one of Lanier's senior support and testing engineers (responsible for Lanier's ever-growing business of non-Windows system printing); he is also quite active on the Linuxprinting.org user support forums. What an exciting week! After many years I finally met Cristian in person at the OSDL Printing Summit that was held in Atlanta this week. The event was great fun and it was really nice to meet with Celeste, Ellen and Jan from OpenUsability.org as well. HP provided all the attendees with free lunches to go along with the free (as in speech, not as in lunch) HP printer drivers. They also provided large bowls with really nice fruit. A shame that a lot of it was still left over at the end. Wish I had one of those bowls here at home. We had really nice facilities for the printing summit thanks to Ricoh/Lanier. Really nice to see so many hardware companies so supportive of Linux. The printing summit went better than I could have hoped for, everyone was really cooperative and I think a lot of common ground was found. I think there will be some very interesting printing related announcements the coming weeks. But now I need to catch up on some much needed sleep!

Hi, well, since it seems some discussions are nowadays done via blogs, let me say something as reply to [http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2006/04/cmake-sadness.html | CMake Sadness] by Aaron. So, building KDE is a huge task. Building KDE 4 is a much harder task than build KDE 1, 2 or 3. Why ? Because with KDE 4 we support more platforms and more compilers. With KDE < 4 we had only UNIX-like platforms with mainly gcc. With KDE 4 we have UNIX-like, OS X (listed separately because it is a bit different: frameworks, bundles, etc.) and Windows. Under Windows MSVC >6, mingw and msys is supported. This is much more than the autotools were every able to do. Read More
