openSUSE 10.3 Installable Live-CD
Beineri

The initial comments about openSUSE 10.3 have been ranging from "best openSUSE release ever" to "worse than 10.2". Strange, or? So why not form your own opinion? It's easy with the openSUSE 10.3 Live-CDs released (KDE ISO). The installable Live-CDs address also the common misconceptions mentioned earlier.

Comet Holmes screenie
As blogged by Bart Coppens, there's currently a naked-eye comet gracing northern-hemisphere skies: comet Holmes. It's in KStars, but you should update the ephemerides with Get New Stuff (Ctrl+D), or the position will be way off. Here's a screenie showing its position as of tonight:

Another nightly build from Berlin
How's possible that most of my nightly builds I mention here, come from Berlin so far? Tasty food ensured by Trolltech or KDAB? Weißbier?
(gfx by mkbart, based on Oxygen icons)
In Berlin KDAB headquarters we have found all facilities needed for hacking. Awesome!

Comet Holmes
Once again, there's a wonderful treat for people who want to take a look outside at night. Less than a year ago, I was pleasantly surprised to be able to see comet McNaught with the naked eye. This time, it is comet Holmes giving us a surprise show by suddenly brightening! More details are all over the net, like here.

FOSSCamp, UDS and KOffice Release Schedule

This cycle's Ubuntu Development Summit has been preceeded by FOSSCamp, an un-conference. No schedule, no talks, just intelligent people and rooms to chat in. Robert Knight does a good summary of some of the interesting sessions. I also talked GPL 3 with people from the FSF, the good news is that core libraries like libc are unlikely to go GPL 3 only any time soon but we are likely to need an extra copy of libsmbclient and possibly other libraries until KDE can go GPL 3 happy. We had a couple of sessions on usability in Ubiquity which hopefully will go somewhere, although partitions are never likely to be an easy thing to understand. We looked at PackageKit and saw that it was good but apt support is lacking at the moment and it missed important apt features like debconf support. I pondered the possibility of porting system-config-printer to KDE which I think is quite promising. We also looked at our troublesome patch to add forkpty() support to Konsole which Robert promises to fix in return for lots of beer. Finally we chatted about Java and the problems of getting it into Ubuntu server.

Back in good old Germany
Maybe some of you have already noticed, I'm back in good old Germany. Since end of April I was in Clifton Park, New York, working at Kitware. This was a really great time. I learned a lot about the US and visited a lot of beautiful and interesting places, beside the usual also locations which are a bit less known (in Germany at least) but not less beautiful: the Adirondacks, a great place for hiking and relaxing and the peninsula Cape Cod just south of Boston (really beautiful city !).

Web Diplomacy

So the cold war between KHTML and WebKit heated up a little again, this time the enemy isn't Apple, but former KHTML developers, and KDE personas. I will spare you the links, since it is all too embarrassing.

Agenda Items
I was surprised to get so much feedback about the KOrganizer agenda items after I posted the screenshots in my last blog entries. There seem to be some strong opinions about rounded corners. Michael Lentner did the right thing and sent a patch. I applied it and suddenly the agenda items look much more slick.
