Folder View panel popups are list views againIn later versions of Plasma 4, the Folder View widget adopted a special appearance when placed in a panel: It would arrange folder contents in a simple list instead of the usual icon grid. Folder View had to be rewritten completely for Plasma 5, and while there were various improvements along the way, the list view mode unfortunately went missing. Until now - on popular request, this feature will make a return soon in Plasma 5.4:  Plasma 5.4's Folder View when placed in a panel To make up for the wait, list view mode in Plasma 5 is cooler than it was in Plasma 4. Rather than showing preview popups for directory items, activating one will navigate into the directory in-place:  One level down |

In-place navigation
When does the in-place navigation revert back to the folder you *want* the folder view to display? On mouseout could be annoying/an accessibility issue for people with poor mouse control, or a small widget.
Is there a way to disable this, and just have activating a directory entry pop-up your preferred file manager instead?

When the popup closes (which happens e.g. on focus loss or when the panel button is clicked again, but not on a simple mouse-out) or on configuration changes.

No, although it could easily be added if there's demand (the in-place navigation was also added on user demand). Opening the file manager can currently be done from the context menu, though.
Edit: Middle-click will now always run (i.e. open in Dolphin) instead of cd'ing into.
Invalid premise
Sorry, my concern was based on an invalid premise.
I didn't study the screenshot closely, and misread your post to say that the Folder View object inside the panel was displayed as a list which changed in-place, not that the Folder View is an icon which pops up a list which changes in-place.
My bad.
Label
Is it possible to put labels next to the taskbar icon? In Plasma 4 that wasn't made, but, is it possible in Plasma 5?

It's possible to add, but not implemented currently. I was thinking of adding the ability to change the icon, though.
Edit: It's now possible to configure the panel button icon.

Plasma 5.3.95 beta release.
Is this functionality in the Plasma 5.3.95 beta release? I installed that beta looking specifically for this and when I add a folder view to a panel it's no different than the previous release.
