Medibuntu to Disappear, libdvdcss now direct from VideoLan

Medibuntu the archive with libdvdcss and a number of other package which couldn't be put into the official Ubuntu archive is to disappear. Gauvain Pocentek who has been maintaining it for some time is wanting to move himself and his server on. At Blue Systems and in Kubuntu we looked over the packages in the archive and realised they were all obsolete or unnessecary because most are now in the official Ubuntu archive or have better equivalents which are. The main exception is libdvdcss which is illegal in the US so can't go in the archive. But fear not I've been working with the developers of libdvdcss at VideoLan to set up an archive directly at VideoLan. It works with either Ubuntu or Debian of pretty much any release

See the libdvdcss page on videolan.org.

I'm doing a stable release update for libdvdread's install-css.sh script for versions of Ubuntu supported on the desktop.

If you spot any documentation that suggests people use Medibuntu please update and point them to videolan for libdvdcss.

Great! Glad to hear about it now rather than later.

Had to look to find another repository for aacgain, but found it here if anyone else is looking:

Gracias por todos estos años de soporte. Con su ayuda he podido migrar a casi 20 amigos a Ubuntu/Kubuntu. Medibuntu cumplió su ciclo y lo hizo de forma excelente, muchas gracias.

Hi :)
I am sad to see it go. Adding the repo was always one of the 1st things i did after any install and their page in "Community Documentation" taught me a LOT about Ubuntu, and Windows, and about movies. A really clever and nicely maintained page and an excellent project.

I am glad it has gone for fairly positive reasons though and very much appreciate all the good work that they have done over the years and the excellent way they ensured continuation for the last remaining piece of the puzzle. Top marks for all you total stars.
Best wishes for all future endeavours!
I hope you all live long and prosper
Many, many thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Here's a multiple choice, pick the right answer:

The following is illegal in the US:

a) eavesdropping on every US citizen and storing their every last bit of electronic data
b) fracking
b) libdvdcss

So, libdvdcss is the main package not moving one somewhere reliable except for VideoLan, but are there other packages whose contents are not already supplied elsewhere, such as w32codecs?

The videolan site at http://download.videolan.org/pub/debian/stable/ now returns a 404 error, so adding the repo directly or using install-css.sh will fail. The source code is still available on the videolan site, so it seems a more complex install path of downloading the source and building from source is now the only real available option. Perhaps a launchpad repo would be a good idea?
