Fedora and KDE/spin's treatment - Discussion

Friday, 23 December 2016
I think it's important that the Fedora KDE / Spins Community speak out about how Fedora treats KDE and other spins. Given Fedora is about to have FESCo election, now is the perfect time to get community feedback on what candidates think. Read More

A new year and a whole lot of stuff (part 1 of 2)

Sunday, 25 January 2015
It's been an awful while since I last blogged, we all go though periods where things get rather crazy all at once or boring, mine went though both. Jobs It took awhile (try 9 months!), but I started one job but decided to resign half a year later when I felt things didn't connect well. I still wish them all the best, they were nice people. Now, I work at a great Open Source company, Remote Learner, we focus on Moodle and provide upstream patches, new features and addons. I spend my time in the DevOps/Infrastructure side of things with Puppet and random scripts. I have a great team and we do awesome things with git too. Read More

The Job hunt continues...

Sunday, 31 March 2013
I've been really busy on the job front these days most recently being interviewed at palantir.com HQ. It was a great experience. I made it to the final steps but unfortunately, was not an exact fit for what they needed (I applied for a Quality Engineering role). Even so, I'm proud to have gotten to the decision stage, they aren't an easy company to get into. Now that my passport is being renewed, hopefully more opportunities will arrive. The economy hasn't made any of this easy looking for work but hopefully something comes around soon. Please take a look at my Linkedin profile. If something catches your interest, contact me :) http://ca.linkedin.com/in/shawnstarr/ Read More

More Cross-desktop collaborators and the eventual '1.0' release of the weather applet

Wednesday, 30 April 2008
Collaboration I am pleasantly surprised to hear from Aaron Seigo and others that there has been more collaboration going on that most people might not know about. Learning that Qt 4.x now can use the Glib event loop gives us a lot of abilities to create glue between KDE and GNOME interfaces which is really encouraging. Read More

Sometimes, you just have to do it

Tuesday, 8 January 2008
Technorati Profile You know, it's just in my nature. When someone falls, you help them up. When someone needs help you provide assistance. Well, the same goes in the online world. You see, ever since Aaron Seigo and Siraj Razick wrote up the CIA.vc applet, I sort of had a small crush for it. After watching it bitrot, stumble and cry for help. I thought it was time to make it smile and feel loved once again. Read More

Well, the homestretch is near, I've had to dropped some functionality to get this finished for KDE 4.0.0. So, no Icons for this version. Ontario Linux Fest 2007 and WeatherEngine changes

Sunday, 14 October 2007
Ontario Linux Fest 2007 I had a good time at Ontario Linux Fest 2007. This being the inaugural event there were some small annoyances like lack of plugs for laptops. They did have free WiFi and there was time for me to hack on the weatherengine while there. This conference has a mix of corporate and geek culture and slightly differs from OLS (Ottawa Linux Symposium) but it's likely to grow and evolve over time. Read More

Plasma Weather Engine update

Tuesday, 2 October 2007
While the Plasma APIs have been in flux (and is beginning to settle down now). I went about implement displaying the wind speed in metres per second as requested by a KDE person. It converts mph to m/s or km/h to m/s. This will become a configuration option once the applet code is started. Read More

WeatherEngine now in KDE Trunk!

Tuesday, 11 September 2007
We had a Plasma meeting yesterday. One of the things discussed was to move the weather engine bits into KDE trunk. This is now done. Richard Moore is planning on taking a look at a bug in the UKMET BBC datasource. Once that issue is fixed. I plan on finishing the ion. I will be adding to the Techbase Wiki information on how the dataengine works, how the data formatting should be done so that each ion can be used by anyone's own weather applets. Read More

KDE Holidays

Saturday, 25 August 2007
Seems like I'm not the only one taking the KDE 'holiday' vacation days. Usually the last two weeks of August are typically quiet. I did hack up the testapplet locally to connect to the WeatherEngine, so far, it returns a list of available datasources (Ions) in a kDebug() :-). Read More
