Moved my blog
Sunday, 15 July 2007
I moved my blog from kdedevelopers.org to wordpress.com. The new address is http://agateau.wordpress.com.
This new blog will stay KDE focused, but will also include more general geek stuff and real-life news. I just posted my first KDE related blog entry. It's about the new way to save images in Gwenview. I am eagerly waiting for Planet KDE readers to check and comment :-)

As you may know, I bought myself a laptop, which I felt compelled to bring with me during my latest vacation to unload my digital camera and for the occasional late night hack.

New Laptop
Thursday, 29 March 2007
Hum, long time no blog...
I finally bought a laptop: it's a Lenovo 3000 N100. I am happy to report almost everything worked out of the box when I installed Ubuntu Edgy, including Wifi. Only tricky thing was figuring out how to get the correct video resolution. It turned out the only necessary action was to apt-get install 915resolution.

Looking for a Linux friendly laptop
Saturday, 10 February 2007
I finally decided I needed a laptop. My dream machine would meet the following criteria:
Linux friendly. I would like to "vote with my wallet" and buy a machine for which there exist open source drivers for all components. I will be compiling a lot with it, so it should be quite fast at this. This means a fast processor, a decent hard disk and not turning into a bakeoven everytime a binary is linking. Not the size of an aircraft-carrier. But not too small too. If you know the model of my dream machine, please tell me!

Looking for a maintainer for Gwenview
Wednesday, 13 December 2006
Having been working on Gwenview for six years, I finally came up with the decision that it was time to move on.
It has been a tough decision, but I realize I don't have enough free time to manage such a project by myself anymore. If you want to know more, have a look at the message I posted to the mailing list.

Gwenview is now using Exiv2
Wednesday, 1 November 2006
While trying to fix a crash in Gwenview when saving a JPEG image (Bug 136112) I found out the crash was caused by a file I borrowed from libexif. Not wanting to debug this code, I decided to switch Gwenview to use Exiv2 instead.

I want to run a survey about Gwenview. I have been googling for some web based surveys for a while, but it would be even better if I could get some real experiences.

Turned thirty yesterday
Tuesday, 26 September 2006
I turned thirty yesterday. Still can't believe it...
My wife came up with a really awesome present: a booklet containing an invitation for 100 different high sensation activities. These activities are as versatile as scuba diving, helicopter flying, bungee jumping, driving a Ferrari, an F3 or even a 2nd war assault tank (!), paragliding... Only problem: I must choose only one of them. And I'm afraid receiving the same present for the next years so that I can try the other activities is not an option...

Gwenview 1.4.0 is out
Monday, 18 September 2006
Just released a new stable version of Gwenview, version 1.4.0. You can find the full announcement here.
I am now thinking about the future of Gwenview. There have been talks a few months ago about integrating Gwenview into KDE4. So I guess it's time to get in touch with kde-core to see if they are still ok with this and if it's the right time to start this work.

New development version of Gwenview
Saturday, 24 June 2006
A few days ago I was looking at Gwenview NEWS file. That's when I noticed how much time has passed since I last released a new version. Seems like becoming a father has a bad effect on my "free time productivity" (still I enjoy it, don't worry!).

Trying to make things simpler...
Tuesday, 28 March 2006
I've been working lately on Gwenview UI, experimenting various changes, trying to make the application simpler to use.
One thing that did not satisfy me was that nobody seemed to grasp the way to switch between browsing and viewing modes. Have a look at this screenshot and try to guess how it's supposed to work.
