The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.3.3, the third bugfix release for Amarok 3.3 "Far Above the Clouds"!

3.3.3 features a number of small bugfixes, e.g. to saving of window and context applet layouts, inhibiting suspend during playback and updating of Wikipedia applet to handle current syntax. Additionally, small code quality improvements and fixes for building the software on different systems with various setups are included.

All in all, Amarok 3.3.3 keeps ensuring you can keep enjoying your music in 2026.

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.3.2, the second bugfix release for Amarok 3.3 "Far Above the Clouds"!

3.3.2 features a number of small improvements, including various small behaviour changes and bugfixes in e.g. user interface, audio backend and saving of playlist files. Additionally, 'added to collection' date, which previously was available in collection search only, is now displayed in track's details in tag dialog. KDE Framework depedency is now set at version 6.5, which was released in mid-2024. All in all, Amarok 3.3.2 should bring improved usability and stability, ensuring you can keep enjoying your music in 2026.

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.3.1, the first bugfix release for Amarok 3.3 "Far Above the Clouds"!

3.3.1 features a number of minor bugfixes and code and build system cleanups. Some occasional crashes related to the new audio backend have also been fixed, and the remaining non-theme icons in user interface have been replaced. The new release also features improvements to the scripting support. Although current scripting functionality is not yet on a par with that of 2.x series in the '10's, especially the script console improvements should help anyone willing to explore the current capabilities.

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.3 "Far Above the Clouds"!

Amarok 3.3.0 is the first version based on Qt6/KF6, corresponding to a decade-sized update of the technological foundations. Additionally, audio engine has been reworked to use GStreamer for playback. Previously, the availability of various features, e.g. ReplayGain and visualiser, was dependent on the Phonon backend in use, an issue that became even more evident with Qt6 Phonon backends. This has now been remedied: The reworked audio engine provides unified feature set for all users and should provide a solid and future-proof sonic experience for years to come. Notable improvements have also landed to the database system: improved character set support helps with e.g. emojis in podcast descriptions and other very exotic symbols, date handling has been improved ('year 2038 problem'), and various other potential and actual database-related issues have been fixed.

Amarok 3.3 arrives approximately 15 months after the initial Qt5/KF5 version 3.0 and 5 months after the final Qt5/KF5 version 3.2.2. Although there have been a number of major changes, they are mostly technical, and their effect on the user experience is relatively minor. Therefore, the version released now is 3.3.0, with some 3.3.x bugfix releases to be expected in near future. A new major version ('Amarok 4') will be released later, after more extensive work on the user interface and other aspects of the software has been carried out.

Second beta for Amarok 3.3 available

Dear fans of music & open source music players,
in preparation of the upcoming Amarok 3.3 release, a second beta release (3.2.82) has been prepared.

This time, the most important change is the new GStreamer-based audio backend. This enables a number of features that weren't available on Qt6 Phonon backends, and likely also provides a more reliable audio experience in general. In addition to audio system work, e.g. more safeguards have been set up around collection scanning code to prevent some potential database issues. More details on changes are listed in the ChangeLog.

These come in addition to the previous beta 1 changes (Qt6 only, database update). Please note that due to the database update in beta 1, downgrading from 3.3 betas is not directly possible, and returning to pre-3.3 versions requires the database (at ~/.local/share/amarok/mysqle/) to be manually backed up beforehand.

Additionally, there isn't an official release with Qt6 support of liblastfm available yet (needed for last.fm support). To enable last.fm functionalities, one needs to use a library version built from e.g. sources at https://github.com/Mazhoon/liblastfm/tree/81e8f9dc16a0a18fe9a066d51c2071086326670b

The Amarok 3.3 beta 2 source tarball is available on download.kde.org and it has been signed with Tuomas Nurmi's GPG key. In addition to the source code, it is likely that some distributions will provide beta packages. Beta for Amarok 3.3 available

Dear fans of music & open source music players,
in preparation of the upcoming Amarok 3.3 release, a beta release (3.2.81) has been prepared.

As shown in the ChangeLog, the changes are mostly technical: Qt5 support is removed, and Amarok 3.3 beta is compatible with Qt6/KF6 only. Additionally, a database scheme update (first such since 2012) fixes encoding and date related bugs.

Please note that due to the database update, downgrading from 3.3 beta is not directly possible, and returning to pre-3.3 versions requires the database (at ~/.local/share/amarok/mysqle/) to be manually backed up beforehand.

Aligning with current major KDE Frameworks version should simplify various direct and indirect software dependencies. However, phonon-vlc is the only supported backend on Qt6 Phonon, which Amarok 3.3 beta is still using for audio playback. This imposes some constraints e.g. on equalizer and analyzer functionalities. A more comprehensive overview of audio backend status is available on an invent.kde.org issue and a related work-in-progress merge request.

Additionally, there isn't official releases with Qt6 support of liblastfm available yet (needed for last.fm support). To enable the functionality, one needs to use library version built from e.g. sources at https://github.com/Mazhoon/liblastfm/tree/81e8f9dc16a0a18fe9a066d51c2071086326670b .

Amarok 3.2.2 released

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.2.2, the second bugfix release for Amarok 3.2 "Punkadiddle"!

3.2.2 features some minor bugfixes, and improvements for building Amarok on non-UNIX systems and without X11 support. Additionally, a 16-year-old feature request has been fulfilled. Concluding years of Qt5 porting and polishing work, Amarok 3.2.2 is likely to be the last version with Qt5/KF5 support, and it should provide a nice and stable music player experience for users on various systems and distributions. The development in git, on the other hand, will soon switch the default configuration to Qt6/KF6, and focus for the next 3.3 series will be to ensure that everything functions nicely with the new Qt version.

3.2.1 features fixes for some small UI bugs, improvements for file transfers to MTP devices, and some compilation fixes for different combinations of Qt6 versions and compilers, enabling easier testing of Qt6 builds. Additionally, it is now theoretically possible to enable last.fm and gpodder.net support in a Qt6 build. However, this requires Qt6 support in liblastfm and libmygpo-qt; a functionality that is not yet included in the most recent released versions of the libraries.

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.2 "Punkadiddle"!

2024 was the year that finally introduced a Qt5/KF5 based Amarok 3 release in April, and it was followed by a number of 3.x bugfix and feature releases. Now, to conclude 2024, it is time for Amarok 3.2.0. The most interesting change is probably the ability to build the same codebase on both Qt5 and Qt6. Qt5/KF5 is still the recommended, tested configuration, for now. Qt6 version should be usable, but in addition to any unknown issues, there are a number of known issues documented in README.

Additionally, 3.2.0 includes e.g. collection filtering and Ampache related features and fixes, oldest resolved feature request being from 2013. Multiple long-standing crash bug reports have been closed lately, and probable fixes for various issues observed in crash report data have been introduced. Amarok 3.2.0 should thus feature slightly improved stability. Some 3.2.x bugfix releases are to be expected in 2025, before the focus shifts to preparations for an "Amarok 4".

3.1.1 features a number of small improvements and bug fixes, including miscellaneous fixes for toolbars and the return of tag dialog autocompletions, a functionality that initially got lost during the Qt5/KF5 port. However, most of the work has again happened under the hood to improve the codebase's Qt6/KF6 compatibility. For the 3.2 version coming up later this year, the KDE frameworks dependency will be raised to 5.108. This should allow replacing the remaining deprecated KF5 functionalities; one of the final barriers preventing Qt6/KF6 based builds from succeeding.

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.1 "Tricks of the Light"!

Coming three months after 3.0.0 and two months after the first bugfix release 3.0.1, the main development focus in 3.1 has been getting Qt6 / KDE Frameworks 6 based version closer. We are not quite there yet, but not that far away anymore. And there are some quite nice new features too! Amarok 3.1.0 brings in a refreshed Last.fm integration, which uses more up-to-date account connection mechanisms, and is better at informing users of any Last.fm errors. Similar Artists context applet does a comeback, and there's naturally also a nice bunch of smaller features and bug fixes; this time the oldest fulfilled feature request was filed just under 15 years ago.

Beta for Amarok 3.1 available

Dear fans of music & open source music players,
in preparation of the upcoming Amarok 3.1 release, a beta release (3.0.81) has been prepared.

As is observable from the ChangeLog, in addition to various bugfixes, there will be some, but not that many, new features included in the upcoming version. However, there has been a lot of Qt6 compatibility preparation work done under the hood, so version number 3.1 reflects the amount of changed code better than 3.0.2 would. 3.1.0 is likely to be released in early August, and all help catching any regressions during this period is highly appreciated. (n.b. one won't be able to compile a Qt6 Amarok with 3.1 yet, but perhaps with the eventual 3.2)

The source tarball is available on download.kde.org and it has been signed with Tuomas Nurmi's GPG key. There doesn't appear to be many binary packages of the beta available, at least at the moment, but the various nightly git builds provided by various splendid packagers are also based on corresponding source code, so using them and reporting findings is also a valid way to participate in the beta test effort.

3.0.1 features a number of small improvements and bug fixes, the oldest fulfilled feature request dating back to 2010 this time. Wikipedia applet, UI strings, and playlist generation and collection filtering are among the components that have received multiple improvements in this release. The efforts to both further polish the Qt5/KF5 version, and keep doing clean-up and preparations that bring a Qt6/KF6 version closer, have been ongoing and will continue.

Amarok 3.0 "Castaway" released!

The Amarok Development Squad is happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 3.0 "Castaway"!

The new 3.0 is the first stable Qt5/KDE Frameworks 5 based version of Amarok, and first stable release since 2018, when the final Qt4 based version 2.9.0 was released.

The road to 3.0 has not been a short one. Much of the Qt5/KF5 porting was done in 2015 already, but finishing and polishing everything up has been a slow, sometimes ongoing and sometimes stalled process ever since. 3.0 Alpha was released in February 2021 and has been since used by many people, as have been nightly builds of git master available for various distributions. Now in the past few months, an effort was made to get everything ready for a proper 3.0 release.

Common usecases should work quite well, and in addition to fixing KF5 port related regressions reported in pre-releases, 3.0 features many bugfixes and implemented features for longstanding issues, the oldest such documented being from 2009. However, with more than 20 years of development history, it is likely that not every feature Amarok has been tested thoroughly in the new release, and specifically some Internet services that have changed their API in recent years are not available, at least for now. It might well be that getting them in better state wouldn't require huge effort, however, so if you know your way with Qt and KDE Frameworks and your favourite Internet music service does not work with Amarok 3.0, you are extremely welcome to join in and help!

In the following months, minor releases containing small fixes and additions, based on both newly reported and longer-standing bug reports and feature requests, are to be expected. Work on porting to Amarok to Qt6/KDE Frameworks 6 should start in the following months, the goal being to have a usable Qt6/KF6 based beta version in 2024 still.

One should observe that due to scripting framework port from QtScript to QJSEngine still being a work in progress, previous Amarok 2.x scripts are often not compatible. The script API documentation at community wiki is also partially out of date. Additionally, due to incompatibilities and other issues, KNewStuff downloading of scripts is disabled for the time being. Having script support in more polished shape is something to work on after an initial Qt6/KF6 version starts to be usable. It is also evident that the web site and community wiki pages largely originate from more than ten years ago, and contain partially outdated information. Some work on refreshing them and pruning the documentation to make it more maintainable is likely to happen during the following months.
