Next Generation Edges Closer

Today I released the Plasma Next Beta.

It's the first major user of KDE Frameworks 5 and tidies up the internal and the externals of the Plasma desktop.

At the Kubuntu meeting yesterday we decided not to ship Plasma Next by default in October but to make a secondary ISO for those who want to test it out while putting the Plasma 1 version into maintenance mode - updating the version and fixing the major bugs and not much more.

It's going to be an exciting release. But not so exciting it'll implode :)

To get a sneak preview grab the Neon5 ISO which Rohan updated yesterday especially for this beta.

Nice work, thank you for this pre-release.

To not include Plasma Next by default in Kubuntu is still a wise decision.

I'm going to test it !

I'm so happy you've adopted the hamburger icon for menu expander buttons.
This whole thing looks so nice, it's surprising that it's a first release of the next generation.

Thanks for the iso, an easy way to test the waters :) Love the breeze theme and the UI feels very responsive.

Some thoughts:

- It seemed odd that konsole wasn't installed.

- the reset button on the login screen had no hint as to its function, or a "Really Reset?" prompt :(

- Would it be possible to have the virtualbox guest tools installed by default?

Looking good!

You didn't add KScreenshot, I wanted to report bugs and I needed to take a screenshot.

Let's get slightly meta: the announcement you link to is a great example of good user communication, especially the “Ready for testing, not production” section.

If Gnome 3.0 and KDE 4.0 had been accompanied by that second paragraph (“As a Beta release…”), I reckon they would have been much better received.
