KDE 4.3.2 and openSUSE 11.2

Since it seems it will turn up quite often, I would like to answer the question 'Will openSUSE 11.2 include KDE 4.3.2?'. The short answer is no and yes :).

The 4.3.2 release of KDE came too late to be included in openSUSE 11.2. As the distribution release gets closer, there is a certain point after which only reviewed changes should be allowed in, in order to reduce the possibility of these changes causing unexpected breakages that might go unnoticed within the relatively short time until the release. This can happen and it wouldn't be very good to fix something small and break something bigger for the release because of some unnoticed mistake. So openSUSE 11.2 will not officially include KDE 4.3.2.

As can be probably seen from the 'officially' in the previous sentence :), this is not all, as openSUSE 11.2 will, in practice, almost include KDE 4.3.2. We were updating from the 4.3 branch until few days before KDE 4.3.2, and were still including bugfixes that were important enough even after that. So if you care more about how it works than what sticker is slapped on top of it, then you shouldn't need to worry.

And additionally, of course, it is possible to install 4.3.2 from the KDE:43 repository, where new stable KDE releases are packaged as long as KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop is frozen for openSUSE 11.2.

Comments

The openSUSE KDE packages do a fantastic build with every KDE release, which is why I run openSUSE, and why I recommend it all the time.

Even though 11.2 won't initially ship with the package, you can certainly update it later. I even run so bold as to run weekly snapshop packages of KDE with this repo:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/UNSTABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2/

I was also testing/running your KDE 4-integrated builds of Firefox in this repository:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/llunak:/mozilla/

Today I notice the repo is empty. Is there a place I can still get these builds? And have you tried/considered building the Qt4 fork of Firefox? Nokia started the fork, and committed to Mozilla. I haven't seen anyone build or package it however.

I have removed home:llunak:mozilla because it had done its job and is not needed now. The Firefox KDE integration is part of openSUSE 11.2 (I will comment more on that one somewhen later when I find the time). You can also get it for some older openSUSE releases normally from the mozilla buildservice repository. I will update http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/FirefoxIntegration to say that.

I realized that the official repository only builds against standard openSUSE releases and not the KDE repositories, which doesn't make it available in all supported openSUSE versions because of too old KDE version. I will put the home:llunak:mozilla repository back.
