Trivially complex.

I found a sound clip. OGG. I wanted to listen to it. Just listen.
- So I clicked on it.
- KDE offered to open it with Kaffeine. I accepted
- Kaffeine started and promptly gave me an error dialog but no sound.
- Went back and chose another player from the context menu: amarok.
- amarok started, asked me 5 (five) almost identical question dialogs (sequentially!) but no sound.
- Back to the context menu and chose xmms.
- xmms started, gave an error dialog about sound card not being available but no sound.
- Back to the context menu, RealPlayer 10 was offered but I already lost interest.
- Copied the url of the sound bit, went to the konsole, wrote ogg123 and pasted the url then hit enter. Bam! Instant Sound.

Trivially complex :-(

but this is still how it often works in linux. not that it always works fine in mac OS X or windows, but at least more often... multimedia still isn't fixed here. lets hope KDEMM/phonon and solid make it 'just work'.

I am afraid I have the very same problem, not sure what the solution is but I have to play the ogg files via the play command :(

Sound and multimedia is a mess :(

Of course, all the proprietary, patent encumbered formats doesn't make it any better...

Well, sound on Linux is still a problem. I kicked arts and use the play command to play system sounds, so one part of the problem is solved. When arts runs, all sounds have an offset, even in games!!

So, "making sound" works now fine, well except playing CDs with amarok. It's an ugly hack to play CDs with audiocd://Wav. The CD-drive is in CDROM mode -> rotates faster then necessary -> noise!! And there are often errors -> amarok itself don't crashes really, but something wents wrong and when I close amarok, the instanced audoicd-kioslave isn't closed and locks the drive, which is rotating faster and faster! Well, except that, amarok is extreamly cool. Well, except that it crashes from time to time, as it dose kaffeine (and some gxine) too.
