Bug Triage

the bug db is getting out of hand. we have millions of LOC, hundreds of apps, and goddess knows how many users at this point. we need to have a triage team. KDE Quality seems the right place to cherry pick people for it, but i think some education may be in order first. when i get back from my weekend sorte i'll try and write my long-awaited follow up to the WhatsThis HOWTO on Bug triage. but what i'm really wondering is this: would people show up for an online Bug Triaging workship ... say ... on irc, #kde-bugtriage and walk a bunch of people through the process, answering questions, offering reassurance and providing praise (or blame ;) as we go ... hum.


Gentoo seems to have had some success with BugDays, where interested users and developers work together on IRC to fix bugs. This could be a way to get people into helping us with our bug database. Later some of those people might be interested to form a bug triage team.

Yep, I suggested just this to George Staikos a while back, and I still think it would be a great idea. But we could do even better, by having an additional channel dedicated to people who are not (yet) KDE contributors, but would like to get involved, where they'd be guided through picking a bug report or a feature request and turning it into a patch, or something otherwise useful. I often find people are very willing to get involved with KDE development, but they just don't know where to start.

Might work nicely, who knows.

...more Texans. Ok, getting delirious. Time for sleep. But I just had to say that I've now pulled ahead of Matt and am at 41 to his 40 this week. :-)

On a more serious note, I think the semi-competition that we've been having might work in a more general sense. It might be worthwhile to set up some sort of weekly recognition or to find some other way to encourage folks to go after bugs en masse from time to time. It's certainly been pretty productive for us this week.

Also there are my thoughts on the fact that we may need to move to a tiered support model at some point to try to take a load off of some of the devels when it comes to basic bug maintenance. It really can be time consuming dealing with the mechanics of bug handling.

Yup yup, definately need more Texans. :-) Oh, and I'm ahead now, but wheels' bugs count more because he's actually writing code to fix his, and i'm just going through and closing old bugs I can't reproduce any more. :)

Feel free to modify www/areas/quality/develop/howto/howtobugs.php. And if you give me permission, I would love to add the WhatsThis Howto to quality.kde.org. I asked in the past, but you did not agree at the time.
Having all these information at one place is generally a good idea.
