An update on telescope control in KStars

KStars should have a decent telescope control by 3.2. The current client/server architecture in INDI is scalable and would be very handy in observatories or when controlling multiple telescopes. I haven't committed anything in quite a while as I have been moving from one location to another within town and will finally settle soon!

There were some architectural problems with a previous version of INDI which required an update of the protocol. After upgrading to the updated protocol, controlling telescopes under Linux would be as easy as click n slew! KStars take care of many of the details and provides a powerful interface to control many of the telescope capabilities.

Okay, enough evangelizing and back to work!

Comments

Being able to use KStars for controlling telescopes is not something every KDE users is capable of due to the lack of telescopes. So what I'd really like to see sometime is report about a real use case of it including photos and movies. Would be great for us interested amateur star watchers who lack the necessary hardware and can only dream about it, as well as being a nice piece of promotional material. :)

I live near philadelphia so the stars are not so bright... i would love someone in new mexico to take a few starshots for me, i mean its so clear you can see the crab nebula with the naked eye. i was lucky enough to see halleys comment when it was in town when i still lived in the country...

coolness!

I actually conducted two "field" tests to see how KStars telescope control performs. Everything went well, the only remaining issue is custom/lunar tracking which will be resolved soon.

I'll take my digital camera and try to take some shots next time I do a test.

I'd like to see pics of it in action as well. Makes me really wish I had a computerized telescope! Heh, maybe I'll try to hook KStars up to the 6.5-m I'll be using next week ;)

Great work, Jasem!
