The Ubuntu Developer Summit is in full swing here in Florida. There have been a load of important decisions taken. For example today I dropped KDE from our desktop. I know this may be controvertial with some parts of the community but we can have unity in our new desktop.. Plasma. Of course we're Kubuntu so we did it upstream.
Martin and the X.org packagers had a face off about X drivers. Kubuntu Mobile has plans to make it more useful next round. We found problems that need fixed like KDE's system localisation support. We reviewed all the patches Kubuntu and Debian has for Qt and found a load that can be dropped or moved upstream. Canonical decided it loves Qt and Qt asked what Canonical wants (accessibility was mentioned a lot).
There's still plenty of sessions to go if you want to take part remotely, see the schedule and the remote participation.
Florida is hot but unfortunately this is considered a bug and every car and building has a lot of energy spent on it turning it into a fridge. This is ironic since the size of the fridges here are not far off the size of the buildings.
I haven't seen Mickey yet (Harald and co spent half an hour queueing to meet the oversized mouse, bless) but we did go to Downtown Disney and ate tea under a giant Magic Mushroom.
What a good looking bunch
Thiago, Mackenzie, Martin, Valorie, Harald, Jussi, Aurelien, Scott, David, Rodrigo, Jonathan, Rohan
In heated discussion between sessions
T-REX scaring Harald and Mackenzie
Konqi-ness monster fanboy

This hat has shiny lights, bless
[Note: fear not, the headline is ironic. I changed the branding in the X session file to match the new KDE branding where KDE is the community and Plasma is the desktop.]

I'm working on KLocale
"We found problems that need fixed like KDE's system localisation support."
If by that you mean not using the system locale or country, then I'm working on that. KDE 4.6 (and 4.5.3. if I remember to commit the backport) will autodetect the system country and use that as a default when loading the KDE locale file, instead of defaulting to C, which is a big improvement. It's still only faking it on non-KDE desktops, but fixing that is my next step. I've already broken KLocale up into platform backends which will allow us to have separate implementations for running on Mac, Windows, Gnome, Meego, Qt etc. Completing the backends is what I'm now working on, but Windows and Mac are my priority there, getting Gnome and Qt integration is going to be harder.
If there's anything in particular you need fixed sooner rather than later, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do.
John.
Plasma
I'm not sure how fair is to have 'Plasma' in the name. It is only a part of KDE Workspace - the other very significant one would be KWin.
Why not saying just 'KDE Workspace'?
Cheerio!
Re: Plasma
"It is only a part of KDE Workspace - the other very significant one would be KWin."
and KDM and System Settings and ... there are lots of pieces. Plasma has brand recognition and the idea was passed by various people involved with workspace components. this is about branding effectivity, not about 100% technical accuracy.
"Why not saying just 'KDE Workspace'?"
because it doesn't resolve the fundamental issue of "KDE" being synonymous with "Desktop" (or, "Workspace", if you wish). so it's the KDE Plasma Desktop, KDE Plasma Netbook, etc. if one wishes to be short, it's Plasma Desktop, or just Plasma (which technically isn't 100% correct, but that's ok).
