kubuntu.de published a note today that Canonical had not answered their requests. Their article makes everything sound much worse than it is. The problem was that when kubuntu.org moved to a new host the sysadmin request to recreate Amu's account never got answered. Amu makes the cool Live CDs that get published along with KDE releases so it's obviously very useful for him to have an account. I should have poked Canonical's sysadmin to remind him but the account has now been added so problem solved. This doesn't mean, as some people seem to have suggested, that Canonical is in any way dropping support for Kubuntu, they continue to be wonderfully supportive, both to the community of developers and commercially if you want to buy a support contract off them.
Meanwhile, Kubuntu packages for Amarok 1.4 beta 3 got released. Pretty new icons!

Still dissing unpaid Kubuntu mates
I notice that in the new interview with Jonathan Riddell up on "Beyond Ubuntu" he is still pointing to this blog post. "Move Along, Nothing to See" is a kick in the face to everyone, not just Andreas Mueller and the Kubuntu team.
Is this something he picked up at Quaker meetings? At 23, it's still not too late to grow up, Jonathan. This is the minimum expected of a project leader.

Whoa there. Ad hoc religious insults is the way to go. I'm sure that Linux distributions regularly come up during their meetings. Uhm. Yeah. Whew. Pass me the Kool Aide.
Immature Developers
I'm so thankful that Canonical would never hire anyone as snarky and juvenile sounding as Jonathan Riddell. Just think of the disrepute such a misstep would bring upon the greater Ubuntu project ....
There’s nothing wrong with Jonathan’s post
There’s absolutely nothing inappropriate about Jonathan’s post. He’s simply trying to calm fears that Canonical is dropping support for KDE.
Let’s hope he’s right, and that this support will eventually match the support given to gnome.
Problem Not Solved Yet
Okay, I'll try again.
When several Linux news sites cover the "Kubuntu developers not happy" issue and after following the links the sole Canonical employee on the Kubuntu project says "Move Along, Nothing To See" you've got a big problem. There's considerably more at stake than a simple admin's oversight. Grown-ups don't mouth off in public in trying to gloss over a screw-up. Has Jonathan Riddell learned this yet? This is not the way to treat unpaid Kubuntu team members. Have I made myself clear?

Developers
Kubuntu needs more paid developers. Even though Canonical says that there is one paid developer for GNOME and one KDE (seb128/jriddell), the rest of the paid developers rather tend to support GNOME. It would be reasonable to pay at least 2-3 more developers to balance, because only providing KDE-packages is not enough.
Icons
Has anyone tried 1.4 yet? Does it only contain the new icon set? I've got to be honest, as much as I like amaroK, I really likes the way that KDE looks the same. Something going against the norm is BAD in my books.

Ignorant, off-handed, and rude.
Pardon me for saying this, but I think you are being a bit rude towards the kubuntu.de team. Dubious is the fact that amu's account was 'returned' after yesterdays event. Well, I will write it off as a co-incidence.
Then how can you explain the fact that you are the only paid kubuntu developer ? And, you must agree with the fact that canonical supports gnome, and will never show the same amount of support for kde. I am sure that canonical pays more than one person to exclusively support/enhance gnome.
Also, why is canonical ignoring the fact that amu is paying for kubuntu.de out of his own pocket ?
If you call all this a "storm in the teacup", and asking people to "move along" for amarok packages, then I am sorry to say that you are being positively ignorant. For all of you who say its a "petty threat" or blame kubuntu.de team, I'd like to see you pay for the maintainence of kubuntu.de domain.
I am not on the kubuntu.de team, neither am I german, I am just a well wisher. Good look amu and the kubuntu.de team.

You've misunderstood wholly, and part of the reason this thing is so sad is that the kubuntu.de protest wholly misrepresents the reality of the situation.
First, Canonical pays one developer to work on KDE, and two to work on GNOME. The remaining Ubuntu developers work jointly on common parts of the operating system. It's hardly a massive divide.
Second, Ubuntu has a very good dispute resolution mechanism which Kubuntu.de have ignored with this protest (sorry to harp on this, but it's very important).
Third, Canonical support local teams by supplying hosting. It's likely that kubuntu.de did not approach the correct channels about this.
Most importantly of all, as Jonathan has said repeatedly, Canonical has always given full support for Kubuntu and continues to do so. And if he isn't in a position to give the definitive view on this, no one is.

Oh, OK, after reading your comments I must agree that I am in error for part of what I said.
I am sorry, I did not know that Canonical pays only two developers. But seriously, dont you think amu must be paid ? If he is doing so much work ? (as even JRiddell agrees)
Ok, I did not about the dispute resolution mechaniism either. But as they claim, if they have contacted Canonical so many times, and not got replies, isnt this the only option they have ?

I don't know the person in question, however I disagree that people should be paid simply because they contribute heavily to a project. This post gives some very good advice: http://jonathancarter.co.za/blog/?postid=27
As for the dispute resolution, they certainly haven't tried approaching the Ubuntu Community Council, and that should be the only option, rather than ruining Kubuntu for many users who have nothing to do with the dispute.
